500 subscribers to start earning, 1,000 to earn from ads. YouTube runs two tiers. At 500 subscribers you can take memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks. Ad revenue and YouTube Premium money need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in twelve months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
The two thresholds, side by side
Almost every guide on this question gives you one number, 1,000, and stops. That was true until YouTube opened a lower entry tier, and the lower tier is where most new creators actually start getting paid.
| Tier | What you need | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Entry expanded YPP |
500 subscribers 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days and one of: 3,000 watch hours in 12 months 3 million Shorts views in 90 days |
Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Jewels and gifts, Shopping. No ad revenue. |
| Full monetisation |
1,000 subscribers and one of: 4,000 watch hours in 12 months 10 million Shorts views in 90 days |
Everything above, plus a share of watch page ads, Shorts feed ads and YouTube Premium revenue. |

Both tiers need the same things underneath: you live in one of the 130 plus countries where the programme runs, you have an AdSense account, two step verification is on, and your channel has no active Community Guidelines strikes. Hitting the numbers gets you into the review queue, not automatically into the programme.
What the 500 tier actually pays you
It pays from your audience, not from advertisers. Channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers during live streams, Super Thanks on uploads, Jewels and gifts, and the Shopping features for tagging products. All of it is money viewers choose to give you.
What it does not include is the thing most people mean by YouTube money: a share of the ads that run on your videos, and a share of what YouTube Premium subscribers pay. Those stay locked until 1,000.
That distinction matters for how you plan. A channel with 600 engaged subscribers in a niche where people pay for things can earn real money at the entry tier. A channel with 600 casual subscribers will earn close to nothing there, and should treat 1,000 as the real target.
The upload rule nobody mentions
The entry tier has a third condition that gets left out of almost every article on this question: 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days.
So a channel sitting on 800 subscribers and 5,000 watch hours from videos posted two years ago does not qualify, no matter how good the other numbers look. You have to be actively publishing. Shorts count as uploads, which is the easiest way to satisfy it if your long form schedule is slow.
The 1,000 subscriber tier does not carry this rule, which is a small oddity worth knowing: it is possible to qualify for full monetisation while failing the entry tier’s activity test.
Subscribers are the easy half
Subscribers is the number people ask about, and it is usually the one that arrives first. The watch hours are what actually hold channels back, so it is worth converting them into something you can plan around.
4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes spread across twelve months. What that means in views depends entirely on how long people stay, so here is the same threshold from three different average view durations.
| Route | Threshold | Views you need in total | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch hours, 2 min average view duration | 4,000 hours | 120,000 over 12 months | 329 |
| Watch hours, 4 min average view duration | 4,000 hours | 60,000 over 12 months | 164 |
| Watch hours, 8 min average view duration | 4,000 hours | 30,000 over 12 months | 82 |
| Entry tier, 4 min average view duration | 3,000 hours | 45,000 over 12 months | 123 |
| Shorts, entry tier | 3M views | 3,000,000 over 90 days | 33,333 |
| Shorts, full tier | 10M views | 10,000,000 over 90 days | 111,111 |
Watch hour rows convert YouTube's published thresholds at three average view durations. Shorts rows are the published view counts divided across their 90 day window.
Two things jump out of that table. First, average view duration moves the target by a factor of four, which is why a channel making 12 minute videos reaches 4,000 hours far sooner than one making 2 minute videos with the same view count. Second, the Shorts routes are much harder than they look. 10 million Shorts views in 90 days works out to roughly 111,000 views every single day. For most channels the watch hours route is the realistic one, and Shorts are the thing that grows the subscriber count while long form carries the hours.
What 1,000 subscribers is actually worth
Reaching the threshold and earning a living are different milestones. Ad revenue tracks views and your niche’s RPM, not your subscriber count, and RPM varies by several times between a finance channel and a gaming channel. A thousand subscribers with 50,000 monthly views earns considerably more than a thousand subscribers with 3,000.

Quick answers
Can you make money on YouTube without 1,000 subscribers?
Yes. At 500 subscribers you can earn from memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks and Shopping. You can also earn outside the Partner Program entirely through sponsorships and affiliate links, which have no subscriber threshold at all.
How long does it take to reach 1,000 subscribers?
There is no published average, and it depends on niche, upload frequency and format far more than on time. The more useful measure is the watch hours: at a 4 minute average view duration you need roughly 164 views a day, every day, for a year.
Do Shorts views count towards the 4,000 watch hours?
No. Shorts are counted separately as Shorts views, not as watch hours. That is why YouTube publishes two different routes. You qualify through one or the other, not by mixing them.
Does the 4,000 hours have to be in one year?
Yes, the last 12 months on a rolling basis. Hours from older videos still count as long as they were watched within that window, which is why a back catalogue that still gets views keeps working for you.
What happens if my subscribers drop below 1,000 after joining?
You stay in the programme. The thresholds are for entry. YouTube can remove channels for inactivity, currently defined as no uploads and no community posts for six months, and for policy violations.
How many subscribers do you need to get paid by YouTube?
Payment itself starts once your balance reaches the AdSense payout threshold, which is $100 in the US. Reaching 1,000 subscribers and monetising is step one; getting the money into your bank is a separate threshold most guides skip.
