01 How much does AC replacement cost?
For a straightforward like for like central air conditioner swap in an average home, reusing sound ductwork, expect somewhere around $4,500 to $6,200 at mid range equipment and minimum efficiency. Push the efficiency and the brand up and the same job runs $7,300 to $10,000. Those figures come from the calculator above, at 2,000 to 2,500 square feet and national labour rates.
For context on the wider job, Angi states that "an HVAC replacement cost is $7,500 on average" with a range that "could be as low as $5,000 or as high as $12,500". That figure covers heating and cooling together, so a cooling-only replacement should sit below it, which is what the numbers above do.

All four rows assume a 2,000 to 2,500 square foot home, a 3 ton system, existing ductwork reused, and national labour rates. Ductwork is the line most likely to take a real quote outside these numbers: repairs add $300 to $1,500, and a full replacement adds $1,400 to $5,600.
02 How this calculator works
Four components are priced separately and then added, rather than adjusting a single national average up and down:
- Equipment. A base cost from your system type and the capacity your square footage implies, multiplied by your efficiency tier and your equipment tier. Both uplifts apply to equipment only.
- Labour. From system type and capacity, adjusted by region at full weight.
- Region. Applied in full to labour and at half weight to equipment, because equipment moves through national distribution while an installer's hourly rate is entirely local.
- Additional work. Each ticked item adds its low figure to your low end and its high figure to your high end.
Two things follow that are worth stating. The size table in the results is generated by the same engine as the headline figure, using your own type, tier and region, so the two cannot contradict each other. 03 What size AC do I need?
Cooling capacity is measured in tons. The common shorthand is one ton per 500 to 600 square feet, which produces the sizing below. Treat it as a sanity check on a contractor's proposal rather than a specification.

The correct method is a Manual J load calculation, which accounts for insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height, air leakage and local design temperatures. Two identical floor plans can need different equipment.
Oversizing is the more common error and the more expensive one. An oversized air conditioner cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull humidity out. The house ends up cold and clammy at the right temperature, and the short cycling wears the compressor. If a contractor proposes more capacity than the table suggests without showing you a load calculation, ask for the calculation.
04 SEER2 and what efficiency is worth
SEER2 rates seasonal cooling efficiency. Higher means lower running costs and a higher purchase price, and whether that trade works depends entirely on your climate and your electricity price.
The federal minimum is regional, which most pages get wrong. Per AHRI, split system central air conditioners under 45,000 BTU must meet "13.4 SEER2" in the North and "14.3 SEER2" in the Southeast and Southwest. Anything sold new meets at least the standard for your region, so the minimum tier in this calculator is a legal floor rather than a compromise.
Work the payback yourself before a salesperson works it for you. Take your annual cooling spend, apply the proportional saving the higher rating implies, and divide the extra equipment cost by that yearly saving. Going from roughly 14 to 20 SEER2 cuts cooling energy use by about thirty percent, so on a $900 annual cooling bill you would save around $270 a year. Against roughly a $2,800 uplift for the high efficiency tier on a 3 ton system, that is a payback just over ten years, which is most of the equipment's service life.
Run the same sum in a mild climate with a $300 cooling bill and you save $90 a year, which never pays back. This is why blanket advice about high efficiency systems is close to useless. Use your own bill.
05 The refrigerant change that affects you in 2026
If you are replacing an air conditioner now, this is the thing most cost guides have not caught up with, and it affects both what you pay and what servicing costs later.
New systems moved to A2L refrigerants in 2025
Under the AIM Act, new residential systems began transitioning on 1 January 2025 from R-410A to lower global warming potential A2L refrigerants. That is why equipment prices moved and why model lines changed over during 2025.
EPA relaxed the installation deadline in 2026
A rule change matters here. Contractors originally could not install pre-2025 R-410A stock after 1 January 2026. EPA's 2026 final rule now allows "the continued installation in homes of HVAC units manufactured or imported prior to Jan. 1, 2025, that use R-410A refrigerant until existing supplies of these HVAC units are depleted".
Practically: you may be offered older R-410A stock at a discount. That is legal and it can be a genuine saving. The question to ask is what servicing that unit will cost in ten years as R-410A supply tightens, in the same way R-22 tightened before it. Get both options quoted and decide with the numbers in front of you.
If your old unit uses R-22
R-22 was prohibited in newly manufactured air conditioning equipment from 2010, so a unit installed fifteen years ago is almost certainly R-410A rather than R-22. If yours is genuinely older, note that R-22 is not banned from use. EPA states that "as of January 1, 2020, no new HCFC-22 will be made or imported into the United States", while "used HCFC-22 that is cleaned up to the same specifications as new refrigerant will continue to be available". Production stopped. Servicing did not, though reclaimed supply is expensive, which is the real argument for replacing rather than repeatedly recharging.
06 Repair or replace?
The widely quoted shorthand is the $5,000 rule: multiply the repair quote by the unit's age in years, and if the result exceeds $5,000, lean toward replacing. A $400 repair on a twelve year old unit gives $4,800, so it is marginal. The same repair on a sixteen year old unit gives $6,400, so replace.
It is a rule of thumb rather than an analysis, and it ignores the two things that usually decide it in practice. First, whether the failed component is the compressor or the coil, both of which are expensive enough that a repair often approaches half the cost of replacement. Second, whether you plan to stay in the house long enough to collect the efficiency saving.
A more useful question than the rule: ask the contractor what has actually failed, what the repair costs, and what the same money buys toward a new system. Then ask what the unit's remaining life looks like after the repair. A contractor who will not answer the third question is telling you something.
07 Tax credits and rebates
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, section 25C, is the one that gave up to $600 for a qualifying air conditioner and up to $2,000 for a qualifying heat pump. The IRS states that "the credit will not be allowed for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025." An installation done today does not qualify.
Note the wording. The cutoff is when the equipment was placed in service, not when you paid for it. If your system was installed and commissioned during 2025 you may still have a claim for that tax year. Ask a tax professional about your specific dates rather than relying on this page.
State, local and utility incentives are entirely separate and many still run. They vary enormously by area and some are first come first served within an annual budget. Check your own electricity utility and state energy office directly, and be wary of any contractor who quotes a net price after a credit without showing you the programme it comes from.
08 AC replacement cost FAQ
For a 2,000 to 2,500 square foot home with reusable ductwork at national labour rates: roughly $3,900 to $5,500 for budget equipment at minimum efficiency, $4,500 to $6,200 at mid range, and $7,300 to $10,000 for premium equipment at high efficiency. Spring and autumn. Contractors have more availability outside the cooling peak, and more importantly you have time to gather three quotes and compare them properly. A unit that fails in a July heatwave leaves you accepting whoever can come tomorrow at whatever they charge. If your system is old but still working, planning the replacement rather than reacting to it is worth real money.
Three, each itemised. Ask every contractor for model numbers, capacity in tons, the SEER2 rating, which refrigerant the unit uses, labour, permits, disposal and any ductwork as separate lines. Identical model numbers across three quotes turn a vague comparison into a straight price comparison, and separated lines show you whether a high total is equipment, labour or ductwork.

How accessible your outdoor unit and air handler are, whether the line set can be reused, line set length, your electrical service capacity, local permit costs, what your specific contractors charge this month, and anything that turns up once the old unit is out. Any of these can push a real quote outside the range shown.

The component level price ranges inside the calculator are typical installed costs for a straightforward replacement and have not been verified line by line against a named pricing source, which is why the results table carries a blank verification line. An earlier version of this page displayed a "2026 verified pricing" badge and credited HomeGuide, hvacprojectcost.com and bpmhvac.com without those sources having been read, gave two different averages in consecutive sentences, stated that a fifteen year old unit uses R-22, described R-22 as banned, and told readers in the calculator that a $600 or $2,000 federal tax credit may apply while the FAQ on the same page said those credits had expired. All of that has been corrected or removed.
